Child Pedestrian Safety Education Workshop Opportunity in Metro Atlanta
The Georgia SRTS Resource Center is now accepting registrations for a Child Pedestrian Safety Education workshop to be conducted at Renfroe Middle School, in Decatur, on Thursday, October 20. This workshop will introduce a newly released child pedestrian safety curriculum developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Once trained, workshop participants will be better prepared to offer pedestrian child safety education to K-5 students in Georgia.
This free workshop is only two hours, lasting from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
What is it? NHTSA’s child pedestrian safety curriculum contains lesson plans for grades K-5 that address walking safely and crossing streets and intersections, as well as parking lot and school bus safety. The two-hour workshop, taught by a former PE teacher who was involved in the development of the NHTSA curriculum, will provide an interactive, hands-on review of the lesson plans and materials, including tips on how to teach the material to Georgia's K-5 students. The curriculum meets several of Georgia’s K-5 Performance Standards for Physical Education and also includes cross-curricular activities to integrate the safety message in other classroom subjects.
Who should attend? Physical Education and/or health teachers, SRTS champions, parents and community stakeholders are encouraged to attend. Stipends to supplement substitute teacher expenses are available based on need and availability. The stipend amount is $50 and limited to one per school; stipends will be mailed to the school after participation in the workshop session.
As an extra incentive, each workshop will have a drawing for a curriculum toolkit that includes ropes, cones and age-appropriate pedestrian safety books to use in teaching the curriculum.
Space is limited, so REGISTER NOW to attend the October 20 workshop session. Click here for on-line registration, or call the Resource Center hotline to register by telephone: 1.877.436.8927.
Register by Friday, October 14 to ensure your spot!
Note: If you will be requesting a substitute teacher stipend, please be prepared to provide information on your school, including name, mailing address and Federal ID number.
