National Bike to School Day is just about here and it’s time to register your event!  Communities across the country will join together to bicycle to school on the same day and throughout the month. While schools are encouraged to celebrate on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 an event on any day in May counts!   National Bike to School Day builds on the excitement surrounding National Bike Month, led by the League of American Bicyclists each May, as well as the popularity of Walk to School Day, coordinated by the National Center for Safe Routes to School every October and Georgia Walk and Bike to School Day in March.

Schools and communities are encouraged to promote bicycle safety, such as the new Bikeology safety curriculum.  Just in time for Bike to School Day, and developed through a partnership between the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD), this ready-to-use bicycle safety curriculum is designed to teach bicycle safety to middle school students. The curriculum is aligned with national standards and includes lessons to help teach bicycle safety skills as well as assessments to measure student progress.   You can download the curriculum online. This curriculum is a great addition to NHTSA’s Pedestrian Safety Curriculum, another resource for teachers and Safe Routes to School advocates to teach pedestrian safety to elementary school students.
